Printed Balustrades: Green Square, Melbourne
Designed by SJB Architects as part of the larger Yarra Gardens Precinct development, Green Square showcases 625sqm of digitally printed glass balustrades creating a dynamic residential development. Cooling Brothers were contracted by Aluline Fabrications to provide the glass balustrading to Building B. Comprising over 600sqm of glass printed with ImagInk ceramic inks, the balustrades span seven levels across the East and West aspects.
The stunning $125 million Green Square Apartment complex is the first stage of this vibrant development. Located 3.5km from Melbourne’s CBD, the project comprises four buildings each with individual lobby access, gathered around a large internal courtyard, or ‘green square’.
Each of the four buildings are built over podium slabs and adjoining properties. Made up of 406 apartments and 93 serviced apartments, surrounding a dynamic outdoor recreational hub, including a residents library, indoor/ outdoor pool, gym, BBQ and entertainment, this project is worthy addition to the ICON resume.
For the central courtyard building with shifting angles and full length balustrades, we wanted to add subtle colouration and a dynamic quality to the glazed edge. We also wanted to provide a degree of privacy for the residents, while maintaining light and outlook from within the apartments’

Achieving subtle colouration using ImagInk printed glass
With 615sqm of printed glass balustrades creating a large scale graphic, the design process was critical. SJB, Aluline and Cooling Brothers explored numerous design options based around the capacity of the ImagInk printing process, ensuring accurate translation to glass.
The final full colour design incorporates a 2.5mm perforated pattern that creates transparency when viewing through the panel from a close distance, with the effect of a full coverage print when viewed from afar. The outcome is truly unique feature glazing application, featuring vibrant colour with subtle transparency, spanning seven floors and two elevations.
