CASE STUDY

Decorative Glass: Gusto Gelato Kiosk, Perth

Layers of light and texture embrace lovers of gelato to tantalise the senses at Elizabeth Quay. Nestled on prime riverfront land in the new Elizabeth Quay development of Perth, the Gusto Gelato Ice Cream Kiosk is a glowing intersection of light, colour and intentionally curated public art.

Reflective during the day and colour-emitting at night, the chameleon-like kiosk reflects the surrounding environment during the day and becomes a small beacon of delight at night. The form of the building is based on the colour and quality of the Argyle diamond which is unique to Western Australia. Architects Iredale Pederson Hook worked with local Perth artist Pamela Gaunt to integrate the story of diamond processing of rough-cut and cut diamonds.

The high performance glazing incorporates the Vanceva Colour System which uses interlayers to incorporate colour into laminated glass and glazing systems, and printed glass in toughened laminate across challenging geometry over almost the entire facade. It also has the flexibility to respond to changing weather patterns. Depth is created by the varying glass colours which also reflect the neon hues from the surrounding Elizabeth Quay precinct. This project demonstrates the architects’ commitment to produce works that are as individual as the landscape they occupy, and which embody unique design responses of innovation and delight.

Project specification

“The imagery evolved from a complex process of hand drawn elements that have been digitised, layered, then printed in achromatic, translucent colours onto glass. Pink and champagne coloured inter-layers, that are representative of some of the unique diamonds from Western Australia, add to the dimensional complexity of the glass. In addition, the changing nature of the work through shadows and reflection, seasonal conditions, internal/external and day/nocturnal views are part the work’s shifting appeal.”
