Shenton House is a purpose built medical and cancer treatment centre in Perth, featuring 190sqm of printed glass including a 15m long x-ray montage. A joint venture between Perth Radiological Clinic and the Anglican Diocese, the centre also houses a new Anglican church on the northern side of the building.
Contracted by Alcom Commercial Fabrications, Cooling Brothers supplied 1,865sqm of processed glass into the project, including 875sqm of 6.38mm and 10.38mm ComfortPlus Grey and 190sqm of ImagInk ceramic printed glass. Architects Meyer Shircore and Associates approached Cooling Brothers to supply the printed component of the project due to the longevity of the ceramic inks, and the ability to work closely with the locally based ImagInk design team. This ensured concise and timely communication, a pivotal element in the successful creation of design concepts to satisfy the large group of stakeholders present in this joint venture project.
The ImagInk printed glass supplied into Shenton House spans two areas of the project. The main feature wall is a 15m long, 4m high mural printed on 8mm toughened glass and installed using spider fittings. The designs feature a montage of x-ray images, a reference to the Perth Radiological Clinic.
The secondary area of printed glazing comprises of 6mm and 8mm clear toughened heatsoaked glass installed with the pure white ceramic print exposed to avoid the green tinting generally associated with clear glass. This was a design consideration made possible due to the extreme durability of the ceramic inks, allowing Meyer Shircore to maintain a consistent colour palette on the external facade without the increased cost of a low iron glass type.
Cooling Brothers supported Alcom Fabrications in completing the project within budget and on time. Shenton House was officially opened by the Anglican Archbishop of Perth the Most Reverend Roger Herft AM on Wednesday 20 March 2013.
