Oxford Youth Foyer
We are very excited to be working on another project with Perth artist Pamela Gaunt – this time the Oxford Youth Foyer, in Leederville. The project is being undertaken by Anglicare WA, the Central Institute of Technology and Foundation Housing, who have all teamed up to build and operate the builder. The architects on the project are GHD and Diploma are handling construction.
The Foyer consists of 98 self-contained rooms over 4 levels plus basement car parking, office areas, training rooms, ground floor cafe and retail space. Located in the heart of Leederville, the Oxford Youth Foyer will provide support and facilities for disadvantaged young people in way of housing and work opportunities, as well as providing education and training, living skills and also engagement with the local community.
It is the first purpose built center of its kind in Australia, and is a significant step forward in addressing Western Australia’s growing demographic of those living at or below the poverty line.
Pam’s contribution to the project is an eye popping 40sqm printed glass facade (isolated area shown above) reaching up to 16m above street level. Pam’s artwork will be back-lit at night with a sophisticated flat-light system, designed to illuminate specific areas of the artwork.
We began printing Pam’s glass this week, our Graphic Designer Trever got some shots as the glass was coming off the printer. Pam has chosen to install the printed surface exposed, which will result in a fantastic contrast between the smooth, non reflective surface of the inks and the glossy surface of the glass, an effect visible in some the photos below.
Pam’s artwork has been looking exceptional coming off the printer and is going to look even better all lit up at night! We’ll be further documenting the project as we head towards completion, so stay tuned…
